What makes a sublingual tablet different?

A sublingual tablet is held under the tongue until it dissolves. A mouth-melt, or orally dispersible, tablet breaks up on the tongue. Neither needs water or swallowing a pill, which is why people who dislike pills like them. The catch is size: these tablets are small, so they suit ingredients measured in micrograms or a few milligrams, such as vitamin B12 or melatonin. A dose of hundreds of milligrams belongs in a regular tablet, a capsule or a powder.

The hard part is the balance. The tablet has to break up in the mouth yet be designed to survive bottling and shipping. Because it dissolves in the mouth, nothing hides its taste, so sweeteners, flavor and masking matter more than in a swallowed tablet. Tablets made to dissolve in the mouth also pick up moisture, so packaging that keeps them dry is planned from the start. We work all of this out at the bench with our chemist and plan bench samples for you to try before production.

How to choose a sublingual tablet manufacturer

To choose a sublingual tablet manufacturer, start with your ingredient and dose. Sublingual and mouth-melt tablets are small, so they suit actives measured in micrograms or a few milligrams, such as vitamin B12 or melatonin, and a good manufacturer will tell you early if your dose does not fit. Ask how they balance a tablet that breaks up in the mouth with one designed to survive bottling and shipping. Ask how they handle taste, since nothing hides the flavor of a tablet that dissolves under the tongue. Ask for bench samples you can try yourself before production, how the tablets are kept dry, and for the certificate of analysis (COA) from the production batch. MCM Labs can develop sublingual and mouth-melt tablets for brands across the United States, with our chemist working out the formula, taste and texture before production.

Questions about sublingual tablet manufacturing

What is the difference between a sublingual and a mouth-melt tablet?

A sublingual tablet is held under the tongue until it dissolves. A mouth-melt, or orally dispersible, tablet breaks up on the tongue and is swallowed with saliva. Both are taken without water.

Which ingredients work in a sublingual tablet?

Low-dose ingredients measured in micrograms or a few milligrams, such as vitamin B12 or melatonin. A large dose does not fit in a tablet this small, so we suggest a regular tablet, a capsule or a powder instead.

Are sublingual tablets absorbed faster?

It depends on the ingredient. Some ingredients can pass through the lining of the mouth; many are simply swallowed as the tablet dissolves. We do not promise faster absorption. We design for the dose on the label and a tablet people find easy to take.

Do you have a ready-made sublingual formula?

Sublingual and mouth-melt tablets are built as custom projects, starting from your ingredient and dose. Send a brief and our chemist will tell you whether it fits.

Do I get a certificate of analysis?

Yes. You receive the COA for your production batch.

What is the minimum order?

Minimums depend on the formula, the tablet and the packaging, so we set them per proposal. Send a brief with your dose and expected volume and we will quote a starting run.
